Designed by Ernesto Hauner for the Brazilian furniture company Mobilinea in the 1950s, this dining table exemplifies the clarity and refinement that characterized early Brazilian modern design. Hauner, an Austrian-born designer who emigrated to Brazil, played an important role in shaping the country’s modern furniture industry. Through Mobilinea, founded in the 1950s, he helped introduce designs that combined modernist principles with the expressive qualities of native Brazilian woods.
This table is crafted in caviúna, a dense and highly prized Brazilian hardwood known for its warm reddish-brown tones and striking natural grain patterns. The broad rectangular top allows the dramatic figure of the wood to take center stage, highlighting the richness and depth of the material. The structure is supported by slender, tapered legs that are subtly splayed, creating a sense of lightness and balance while maintaining stability. This restrained architectural approach is typical of Hauner’s work, where proportion and material often define the design.
The wood surface has been carefully refinished, enhancing the depth of the grain while preserving the integrity of the original construction. The table remains in excellent condition.
Both functional and visually refined, this piece represents a thoughtful example of mid-century Brazilian furniture, where modern design sensibilities meet the natural beauty of indigenous hardwoods.
